Growing Hope

Growing Hope fosters a more sustainable and equitable local food system where all people can grow, sell, buy, prepare, and eat nourishing food.

Growing Hope

Chefs in the Garden is our yearly garden gala where we host local chefs from the area who come to prepare a 3-5 course dinner for our patrons. The object is to highlight how Ypsilanti has been historically marginalized when it comes to fresh produce and how we plan to utilize the funds raised. Labeled a food desert, we actually describe this disparity as food apartheid and why our roots are in food justice. We ensure that free, fresh food is available when the seasons allow, and when it doesn't, we work alongside other local organizations and share what is available at our farm stand outside. The food found there is always free and always fresh. We also have a You-Pick section out front of the house that the community can access at any time. We provide all the tools needed to harvest food to take home so anyone can enjoy a nice salad and more. All of the money invested goes back to the community in one way or another. From growing and giving free seedlings away to building raised beds for low-income families and seniors, to teaching every grade level about where their food comes from and how to grow their own, to how to be a food justice leader, to the incubator kitchen where home food businesses are able to start a business without all the overhead, fresh food for all is our focus.

Through workshops, training, events, and tours, we educate people who have a range of gardening experience and skills to learn how to feed themselves. Our programs are transformative, inclusive, and created to be delivered through a racial equity lens. We encourage all participants to make eating and purchasing decisions that meet their wellness goals. We prioritize serving populations with the most barriers to accessing fresh and affordable food.

Growing Hope is a hopeful community of givers committed to creating an honest, constructive, and compassionate culture in all our interactions with the community. But above all, we envision a community where all people- particularly those with barriers due to race, class, culture, language, ability, and mobility- have access to and learn to grow nourishing, culturally appropriate, affordable, and affordable local food.

From the bottom of our hearts, we Thank You for caring, sharing, and giving with love for the community of Ypsilanti, our future generations, and those who have a dream and work to make it a reality. We look forward to seeing you at Chefs!
