Kirsten Carey, guitar Andrew Bishop, saxophone Molly Jones, saxophone Rafael Statin, tenor saxopone & bass clarinet Ben Willis, bass Jonathan Taylor, percussion

Kirsten Carey is a genre-defying experimental guitarist based presently in Detroit after obtaining a music degree from UM, although she was born in Chicago and spent the first eighteen years of her life there. Carey was recently featured on clipping.’s track “Stab Him in the Throat” for the Emmy Awarding-winning TV show Rick and Morty (Sub Pop) and contributed a piece to the Elliott Sharp-curated compilation I Never Meta Guitar III (Clean Feed). She has played with Tyshawn Sorey, Okkyung Lee, Elliott Sharp, and others, and shared bills with Thumbscrew and Anthony Pirog. Carey’s work plays with the boundary between music and the more theatrical and presentational aspects of performance, and constantly tampers with the idea of “genre.” The Uroboros Sextet is Carey’s newest project, in which she surveys the artistic hindrances of depression through sprawling charts inspired equally by rock and modern classical, with energetic spurts of improvisation.

Andrew Bishop is a versatile multi-instrumentalist (saxophone, clarinet, flute), composer, improviser, educator, and scholar comfortable in a wide array of musical idioms. He maintains an active national and international career and serves as an Associate Professor and Chair of Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation at the University of Michigan where he teaches applied jazz saxophone, composition and improvisation. Bishop has recorded over forty compact discs as a sideman and regularly performs with his own groups (Bishop/Cleaver/Flood, Andrew Bishop’s Hank Williams Project, Andrew Bishop’s Mainstem, and Blue Origami) and as a member of Gerald Cleaver’s Violet Hour and Uncle June, the Ellen Rowe Quartet, Phil Ogilive’s Rhythm Kings, and the contemporary concert music group Opus 21. As a composer and arranger, he has received over twenty commissions from professional organizations and universities and numerous residencies. He has also completed composition and arranging projects for Matt Wilson, Robert Hurst, Steve Houghton and saxophonist Dave Liebman.

Saxophonist, flutist, composer, and electronics wizard Molly Jones performs on saxophones, flutes, and electronics. She has performed with musicians such as Nicole Mitchell, Tyshawn Sorey, Robert Ashley, Jaribu Shahid, Wadada Leo Smith, and Douglas Ewart. Her compositions have been performed internationally, with several commissions and her video installations have been presented at a number of festivals. Her album Microliths was nominated for Debut Album of 2017 in NPR’s Jazz Critics Poll. She is a member of Polyfold musical arts collective and plays with numerous bands, including Rhyta Musik Balkan brass band, Gabriel Brass Band, ParkJonesKoi. A graduate of UC Irvine’s program in Integrated Composition, Improvisation, and Technology (where she studied with Nicole Mitchell), her compositions range from through-composed chamber works and graphic scores to electro-acoustic environments for improvisation, incorporating video, movement and words.

Ben Willis is a bassist whose affinities lie in collaborative projects, new music, improvisation, and the merging of cross-disciplinary elements. He has performed his original collaborative work at venues and festivals around the U.S., including at the Electroacoustic Barn Dance at the University of Mary Washington, the Whitewater Arts Alliance Series at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater and the Ratchet Series at the Skylark in Chicago. He is a member of Weather Duo, an electroacoustic ensemble with cellist Pat Reinholz dedicated to performing new music that blends classical training with improvisation and folk idioms. He has also toured and recorded as a sideman, working with many indie/folk artists, including Anna Vogelzang, Dietrich Gosser and Thistle and the Thorns. He often participates in recitals of new music and collaborations with composers and performs regularly with the jazz/rock project Lovely Socialite Mrs. Thomas W. Phipps, and the free improvisation trio Glacier.
