Event Details

Heralded as “the next accordion star” by the Chicago Tribune, French-born Julien Labro and the Chason Experiment is ready to "swing the house down."

Labro takes the audience on a trip down memory lane with his new project Julien Labro & The Chanson Experiment through which he explores the beauty and lyricism of the French chansons. Labro revisits the sounds of his childhood in Rodez, a small town in the south of France, by modernizing the classics of Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Michel Legrand, Charles Aznavour and many more.

Known for his work with various artists and groups such as Hot Club of Detroit and Jason Vieaux, Labro imbues The Chanson Experiment with a range of influences from his eclectic background, which ranges from classical, folk, jazz to hip hop, electric, and world music. Labro's unique vision weaves together diverse genre bending inspirations that are impossible to unravel, creating a voice that resonates with modern styles as boldly as it evokes timeless classics.

The accordion, the cornerstone of the French chanson, shines at the forefront of this program and sparkles in Labro's capable hands with jaw-dropping virtuosity. Labro brings a modern harmonic sophistication to heart-on-your-sleeve themes, without losing the original intentions. The program follows Labro into an adventurous new territory filled with twists and turns that simultaneously embraces, challenges and reimagines classics for the contemporary audience.

Based in New York City, Labro has assembled a cast of musicians, each of whom brings additional, unique influences and experiences to the music. The band features Jon Dixon on piano, Jordan Schug on bass, and David Alvarez on drums.
