YPSILANTI SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PERFORMS 21ST SEASON OPENING CONCERT ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6 AT TOWSLEY AUDITORIUM, CONDUCTED BY MUSIC DIRECTOR ADAM C. RICCINTO

“21 and Counting” Season premiere concert program features the fanfare “Unsung Heroes”, a world premiere by local musician Brooke Pierson commissioned by the orchestra to commemorate its 21st season. Also on the program will be Dvorak’s 6th Symphony and more.

YPSILANTI -- Music Director Adam C. Riccinto and the Ypsilanti Symphony Orchestra (YSO) launch their 21st season with a concert at Towsley Auditorium, Washtenaw Community College, on Sunday, October 6 at 3:30pm. In keeping with the theme “21 and Counting”, each performance will feature a composition by a composer living in the 21st century. The YSO is thrilled to present the world premiere of “Unsung Heroes”, a fanfare for orchestral brass and percussion composed by local music teacher and musician, Brooke Pierson, for this season. Also included on the program are Antonin Dvorak’s 6th Symphony, Carl von Weber’s Oberon Overture, and the October Overture for string orchestra by Eric Whitacre.

Brooke Pierson is the Department Chair and Music Director of Band and Orchestra at the Washtenaw International High School and Middle Academy. He studied at Michigan State University and previously taught in the Lansing and Okemos Public Schools. He is primarily a self-published composer whose works have been performed across the country and throughout the world. Some of his works are also available through Excelcia Music Publishing and C. Alan Publications.

Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 6 in D major was composed in 1880 for the Vienna Philharmonic, this symphony’s fresh folk-like melodies and rhythms, and fine orchestration represent Dvorak’s full maturation as a symphonist.

The Oberon Overture was composed by Carl Maria von Weber in 1826. While the opera “Oberon, the Elf King” was not well received and faded into history, the Overture itself is considered one of Weber’s best and most enduring works.

Eric Whitacre’s October Overture was written in 2000 for winds and has been transcribed for strings. The Overture evokes a peaceful musical representation of his favorite month, saying “something about the crisp autumn air and subtle changes in light always make me feel sentimental”.

The YSO is proud of its unique and significant cultural contribution to the Ypsilanti area. Its mission is “to share our passion for music through innovative programming, creative collaboration, and arts advocacy,” and to “actively contribute to the music appreciation and education of our musicians, organizational members, and audience.” Led by Founder and Music Director Adam C. Riccinto, the Symphony marks this 21st year with its 2019-2020 season.

The YSO’s growth has been driven by its partnerships with regional organizations, strengthening community ties, and offering diverse musical experiences to its audiences. Since its founding, the YSO has worked to showcase and collaborate with local individuals and performing arts groups. In addition to the traditional concert season, the YSO also performs its annual “Ypsi Pops” outdoor concert at Riverside Park to sit by the Huron River and kick off the summer with the music of its own community orchestra the liast weekend in May. Sponsored by the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission, this very popular event draws over 500 residents and friends over the Memorial Day weekend,

Other programming highlights of the YSO’s 21st season will be in December with the String Orchestra of Washtenaw International High School under the direction of Brooke Pierson, in February featuring a collaboration with the Ann Arbor Chapter of Opera on Tap, and in April with Alexander Mishnaevski playing electric viola.
